Colloids are a branch of Soft Matter. A Colloid is a suspension of soft particles, often not fixed in size and shape. There is an entire branch of chemistry dedicated to studying and formulating colloids and suspensions. These complex fluids can include particulates, macromolecules, micelles (“particles” that are constantly in flux because the components exchange with the solution) and small molecule modifiers and stabilizers. Colloids, and emulsions find a lot of use in paint formulation and food science.
