To me associations suggests the electrostatic association of particles in a fluid and the guided association of chemical objects on a surface using wetting and capillarity. I believe someone else may see different types of associations here – communities of …? The first image is a representative close up. The second is the whole piece and the third image is the framed piece on a wall. The rest are detail images. Associations was created by first laying blue toned paint with strong juicy brushstrokes. A loose oil wash was overlaid, getting a little bit of dripping and paint movement to happen using flicks of turpentine. As the solvent picks up the paint, the binders and waxes dissolve, which allows the pigment to cluster. Different pigments have different associations – different clustering properties. These treatments resulted in hints of a grid pattern. Painted details enhance and visually comment on the underlying grid and other textures and patterns. The underlying layers really address the properties of the paint, while the painted details draw attention to and away from the physicality of the paint, creating a lively and painterly visual dialog.
